War service: Egypt, Western Front Embarked Wellington, 10 October 1915; disembarked Suez, 18 November 1915. Joined 1st Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment, Moascar, 9 January 1916, and posted to 8th Company. Proceeded to join the British Expeditionary Force, France, 6 April 1916. Admitted to No 1 NZ Field Ambulance, 23 January 1917 (conjunctivitis); rejoined unit, 26 January 1917. Detached to Corps Lewis Gun School, 28 May 1917; rejoined unit, 19 June 1917. On leave to United Kingdom, 3 July 1917; rejoined unit from leave, 16 July 1917. Appointed Lance Corporal, 21 July 1917. Reported missing, 12 October 1917. Preliminary Court of Enquiry, 17 April 1917, concluded: 'Insufficient evidence forth-coming to decide what became of this man.' Court of Enquiry, 12 April 1918, concluded: 'Has not been reported as P. of W. & not passed through a Casualty Clearing Station or been admitted to any hospital sick or wounded.
