Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On the night of 3rd/4th October the route of evacuation was subjected to a heavy bombardment with a barrage
behind the Bearer Relay Post. Nevertheless, Pte Stewart repeatedly volunteered for the task of carrying patients through the barrage and he continued throughout the night to set his comrades a fine example of cheerfulness, courage and endurance.'
