Military Medal 'For exceptional gallantry. This man was a stretcher bearer during the operations of his company against La Basse Ville on the morning of the 27th July. Despite an intense enemy barrage this man with an apparent indifference to personal danger bandaged many wounded and from time to time carried them back to our trenches through the deadly enemy barrage. By his fortitude he has undoubtedly saved the lives of many of his comrades.'
