'For conspicuous gallantry in the Field. East of St Julien on the 4th inst: this man performed most excellent work in his capacity as Stretcher Bearer. Until wounded himself he worked continuously during the heaviest part of the bombardment in the evacuation of out wounded. He organised Prisoners into Stretcher Bearers squads and thereby enabled the wounded to be got out with rapidity. He exhibited absolute fearlessness at his work and inspired confidence in all near him. He is already the possessor of the "Military Medal".'
