'For constant devotion to duty and continuous good work. Patterson acted as clerk for many months and showed marked administrative ability. He at all times applied himself unremittingly to his work and has proved of the utmost value to his commanding Officer. In addition to his duties as clerk this NCO filled the position of Headquarters Quartermaster Sergeant during one of the most important periods of the advance, and in spite of very difficult conditions this NCO by hard work and energy ably carried out the duties of Quartermaster Sergeant.'
