Meritorious Service Medal 'During the period September 22nd 1917 to February 9th and during the whole of a long previous service in France he has shown great courage and cheerfulness under dangerous and trying conditions. He has shown exceptional devotion to duty and had great steadying influence over the Sappers and Working Parties with him. The effect of this has been that he has made very good progress with jobs even if the conditions were unfavourable.'
