Medals

Military Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. At about 9am on 12th October 1917, Private Mooney showed the greatest bravery in carrying messages to the troops engaged in the attack on Belle Vue Spur. His orders were to deliver messages to the Commanders of four different Companies scattered around the hill side at the very edge of the enemy's defences. Private Mooney cheerfully undertook this difficult task which he carried out with great courage and resource, although he had to move nearly all the time in the open, with not even the cover of darkness as a protection from the enemy's machine gunners and snipers. The shell fire was also considerable, but this brave runner completed his task and thus rendered very valuable services at great personal risk.'
