'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an attack. He was leading his attacking section, and, coming under heavy fire from an enemy machine gun in front, he promptly rushed forward with a Lewis gun and, under cover of his fire, enabled his section to advance and take the position, capturing two machine guns and seventeen prisoners. He showed great courage and promptitude.'
