'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in holding an advanced position under very heavy shellfire until ordered to consolidate on another line. Later, when all his company officers were casualties, he took command, and held his position for thirty-six hours, although heavily bombarded by hostile shellfire. He set a fine example throughout.'

'For conspicuous gallantry and coolness in action. In the attack near Le Quesnoy on 4th November, 1918, the first objective had been gained and his company were pressing forward to a second objective when they came under very heavy fire, but owing to his fine example at the head of his company they continued the advance. The second objective was gained.'
