Military Cross

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in command of his company during an attack after the company commander had been killed. When a counter-attack was anticipated he went round all the posts cheering and encouraging the men. His prompt action did a great deal to prevent the attack developing. During a heavy bombardment of his of his trenches he was twice wounded, but remained on duty till he collapsed.'
