Military Medal 'Near Birr Crossroads, on the night of the 8/9th March 1918, the 13th Battery, while firing in response to an S.O.S. Signal was subjected to a heavy bombardment with both high explosive and gas shell. The telephone wires were continuously cut, but this NCO worked throughout in a most exposed position and succeeded in effecting repairs so that communications were always maintained. On completion of the firing, the enemy bombardment was so intense that the gun detachments were withdrawn to a flank. Bombardier Grant volunteered, however, to remain in the control post, a flimsy dug out near the guns. While he was here, an ammunition dump was set on fire. On his own initiative he rushed out and extinguished the fire, being severely bruised by shell splinter while so employed. Not withstanding this disability he subsequently remained at his post in the control until relieved. His conduct throughout was most gallant and set a splendid example to the other ranks of the Battery.'
