In the attack on 1st October, in command, he organized the line of defence on the Crucifix Road, under enfilade fire, with his own men and with those of other units. His coolness and leadership encouraged those under him to resist an enemy counter-attack, and his reports on the situation from time to time were of immense assistance. He did fine work.'
