Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. His company was held up during
an attack by an enemy machine-gun. He worked round to a flank and rushed the
gun single-handed, killing the crew. He then led his platoon forward to the
objective, which he captured and held, under very heavy shell fire. His fine
leadership and courage were of the greatest value at a critical time.'
