'On 26th August at Avesnes this NCO led a patrol in daylight through the Railway siding in front of our positions. In so doing he located a large number of the enemy on his front and right flank. On his left flank was the town of Bapaume, which was then occupied by the enemy. Corporal Gledhill displayed great gallantry in establishing his patrol in the coal dump from which place he opened fire on a large party of the enemy who were approaching his position and inflicted casualties on them. On 3rd September, this NCO was in charge of his Platoon which was detailed to make a reconnaissance of Belu Wood, which was on the flank of our advance. The troops on our left lost direction and it became necessary for him to considerably widen the front to cover the Battalion?s flank in a Wood with thick undergrowth. A German machine gun which opened fire on him was silenced and captured, the crew being killed. On reaching the edge of the wood a large party of the enemy were seen attempting to destroy a railway bridge. Corporal Gledhill sent out a patrol to outflank them and succeeded in capturing 17 prisoners. When this operation was complete Corporal Gledhill found that he had reached a point some distance from the rest of the Company and immediately sent a report as to his position. In so doing he met the O.C. of the Support Company which had been sent up to cover our flank and placed himself under his orders.'
