'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. As a Battalion runner, this man has shown particularly gallant conduct in all Operations during August and September. On 24th August 1918 in Operations about Bapaume he was continually under heavy artillery and machine gun fire carrying messages between Battalion and Company Headquarters. On 2nd September 1918, he succeeded in getting all messages that were sent by him, through to the Front Line, which had been held up by machine gun fire. He displayed an utter contempt for danger and his cheerfulness under trying circumstances, had a great effort on the morale of his Comrades.'
