'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. At Crevecoeur on 30th September 1918 he set a fine example to the men of his platoon. Under heavy machine gun fire he brought in a wounded man from a very exposed position. During a hostile counter-attack he placed his Lewis gun in the position where it was most effective and killed a number of the enemy although this position was most dangerous to himself being exposed to enemy fire. He was wounded in the arm but refused to leave and remained at duty throughout the day and following night.'
