Military Medal

'Operations opposite Polderhoek 27th November to 5th December 1917. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On 3rd December 1917, during the attack on the Polderhoek Chateau, Lance Corporal Fotheringham was in command of a Lewis gun Section: when the attack opened this NCO displayed great dash and coolness in pushing his gun forward in the face of heavy machine gun and rifle fire. One by one his team was reduced until there were only three left to work the gun, and carry the ammunition. With the greatest courage and determination, Lance Corporal Fotheringham continued to advance, and on every possible occasion used his gun with effect, and greatly helped to keep down the fire of the enemy. When the advance to the final objective was no longer possible, he protected the troops during consolidation. Under the most dangerous and trying circumstances he remained in this forward position until ordered by his Company Commander to fall back on the new line. His conduct throughout was a splendid example to those under his command, and he showed exceptional skill in the tactical use of his gun.'
