Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He rendered the greatest assistance to his company commander, who was wounded, controlling the men under heavy shellfire, and directing the consolidation of a captured position. He set a fine example to his men by his coolness and devotion to duty under exceptionally trying circumstances.'
