Proceeded overseas to France, 26 October 1917; joined 3rd Bn, Canterbury Infantry Regiment, in the field, 9 November 1917, and posted to No 2 Company. Admitted to No 4 NZ Field Ambulance, 7 December 1917 (diarrhoea); rejoined unit, 24 December 1917. Adopts Regimental No 57250. Transferred to 1st Bn, Canterbury Infantry Regiment, 10 February 1918. Found guilty, 23 July 1918, of drunkenness while on picquet duty: awarded 28 days' Field Punishment No 2. Appointed Lance Corporal, 29 October 1918; promoted Corporal, 6 January 1919. Marched out to England, 4 March 1919; marched in to Sling Camp, 10 March 1919.
