'For most conspicuous gallantry and initiative under difficult and dangerous conditions during an attack near Beaumont Hamel at 2pm on 30th March 1918. This Private, when his section commander was killed immediately assumed command of the Section and under a hail of bullets, led a daring rush on to an enemy Machine Gun, all the crew of which he put out of action. His conduct throughout was of the very bravest, and he led his men with great ability.'
