'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in the field on the 26th March 1918, north east of Mailly Maillet. This man acted as a stretcher bearer and displayed the greatest gallantry, energy and devotion to duty. On one occasion during heavy shelling and machine gun fire, he went out into the open and brought in a wounded man without assistance from anyone else. The enemy were not only shelling but aftereach salvo of shells were following it up with heavy M.G. fire. Throughout the whole operation his work has been on the highest standard.'
