War service: Western Front Embarked Wellington, 19 January 1917; disembarked Devonport, England, 28 March 1917, and marched into Sling Camp. Found guilty, 5 May 1917, of being absent without leave, 25 April-1 May 1917: deprived of 4 days' pay and forfeited 4 days' pay under Royal Warrant. Found guilty, 12 May 1917, of being absent without leave, 6-9 May 1917; deprived of 4 days' pay and forfeited 4 days' pay under Royal Warrant. Proceeded overseas to France, 26 May 1917; joined 4th Bn, NZ Rifle Brigade, in the field, 18 June 1917, and posted to C Company. Found guilty, 28 July 1917,of being absent without leave, 9 pm, 23 July-5.30 am, 27 July 1917: awarded 28 days' Field Punishment No 2, and forfeited 5 days' pay under Royal Warrant.
