'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the attack on Vancelles, on 30th September, 1918. With a patrol of three men, in full view of the enemy, and finding that the footbridge at the lock was mined, he cut the wires and fuse of the mine. He then found a party of four preparing to mine the traffic bridge, and killed one, driving the others off. He then crossed the bridge and penetrated the enemy's lines, returning after seven hours with valuable information.'
