Military Medal 'Gallantry and devotion to duty. On the 15th September 1916, after all the Officers of his Company had been either killed of wounded, Sergeant Fitzgerald rallied 40 men, afterwards reduced to 25 through casualties, consolidated part of a strong
point north of Flers village, and held on till relieved at about 4pm on the 16th September. His coolness during a trying time was an inspiration to his men.'
