'Operations: Taking of Grid Support Trench, North West of Flers, 1st October 1916. This man went forward to reconnoitre on the 1st October for his company commander, to ascertain the position of the forward waves of the attack who had overrun the objective, and were under heavy shell and machine gun fire. He returned with valuable information and subsequently went out again with an important message from his company commander to these men. Going along to several parties who were in shell holes under a hot fire. His conduct was very gallant'
