Mentioned in Despatches 'Operations Messines 7th June 1917. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the battle of Messines this soldier displayed very gallant conduct as stretcher bearer. From 3.30am on the 7th June he carried the wounded through a very heavy barrage until at 1am on the following day he was ordered to rest by his Company Commander. He commenced his work again at 3.30am and throughout the day in heavy shelling he rescued his wounded comrades and carried them to the Dressing Station. This good work he continued until the Company was relieved at 5pm on 9th June and his gallantry and devotion to duty was a fine example to the soldiers of his Company.'
