'On 25th August in the operations near Bapaume he displayed great gallantry Despite very heavy enemy shelling he worked unceasingly on the lines between his artillery Brigade and its Batteries, and between his Artillery Brigade and its visual station which was in touch with the Forward Observing Officer. Later, regardless of his own safety, and when hostile shell fire severed all communications to the rear, he laid a circuit to a Battalion Headquarters. Again on 1st September 1918 near Bapaume his coolness and courage as a member of a forward party laying lines under heavy fire were most marked. He assisted to carry a wounded comrade to a place of safety and then returned to his work. His devotion to duty encouraged all.'
