War service: Egypt, Western Front Disembarked Suez, 15 March 1916. Embarked Alexandria for France, 7 April 1916. Deprived of 3 days' pay, 11 April 1917, for insolence to a superior Officer. Admitted to No 1 NZ Field Ambulance, 23 April 1917 (mumps); rejoined unit, 6 May 1917. Detached to NZ Working Bn, in the field, 20 April 1917; rejoined unit, 19 May 1917. Wounded in action, 7 June 1917 (gun shot wound, left leg; compound fracture, severe); admitted to No 77th Field Ambulance, 8 June 1917; transferred to No 2 Australian Casualty Clearing Station, 8 June 1917; to No 11 Stationary Hospital, Rouen, 9 June 1917; to England, 14 June 1917, and admitted to No 1 NZ General Hospital, Brockenhurst, 15 June 1917. Classified unfit by Medical Board, 30 July 1917, and placed on NZ Roll. Commenced return to New Zealand from Avonmouth on board HS 'Maheno', 8 August 1917; discharged, 30 November 1917 (no longer physically fit for War Service on account of wounds received in action).
