'Operations: British front line south of Hebuterne. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On the 5th June 1918, Corporal Falls, in company with another NCO set out from our line with the intention of raiding an enemy post by daylight. They started at 2pm, crawled under the enemy wire and jumped into his post, where they surprised and captured two Germans. In bringing the prisoners back a party of the enemy in another post rained bombs on the raiders and killed one of the Germans, at the same time wounding Corporal Falls, who nevertheless emptied his magazine at the bombing party, thus mutually assisting in the getting back of the prisoner safely to our lines. This daring act set a splendid example to the men of this NCO's Company, in view of whom it was carried out.'
