War service: Western Front Embarked Wellington, 16 October 1916; disembarked Plymouth, England, 29 January 1916, and marched into Sling Camp and reverted to ranks. Taken on strength, 3rd Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment, Codford, and posted to 8th Company, 30 March 1917. Proceeded overseas to France, 28 May 1917. Wounded in action, 2 October 1917 (gun shot wound, right hand), and admitted to No 4 NZ Field Ambulance; transferred same day to No 2 Canadian Casualty Clearing Station; to 12th General Hospital, 4 October 1917. Transferred to England, 12 October 1917, and admitted to No 1 NZ General Hospital, Brockenhurst, 14 October 1917; transferred to NZ Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch, 12 November 1917. Classified as unfit by Medical Board, 28 January 1918, and placed on NZ Roll. Commenced return to New Zealand from Liverpool on board 'Maunganui', 2 February 1918; discharged (no longer fit for War Service on account of wounds received in action), 17 May 1918.
