Proceeded overseas to France, 15 June 1917, marched into NZ Base Depot, Etaples, 18 June 1917.

Admitted to No 24 General Hospital, 3 July 1917 (bronchitis); transferred to No 6 Convalescent Depot, 13 July 1917; to No 5 Convalescent Depot, 16 July 1917; to NZ Base Depot, 2 August 1917; rejoined Pioneer Bn, in the field, 29 August 1917.

Wounded in action, 18 October 1917 (gun shot wound, right thigh, left shoulder), and admitted to No 3 Australian Field Ambulance; transferred same day to 3rd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station; to No 54 General Hospital, Boulogne, 19 October 1917; to England, 1 November 1917, and admitted to Mile end Hospital, London, 2 November 1917. Transferred to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames, 14 December 1917.

Classified unfit by Medical Board, 18 January 1918, and placed on NZ Roll.

Commenced return to New Zealand from Liverpool on board 'Maunganui', 2 February 1918; discharged (no longer physically fit for War Service on account of illness contracted on Active Service), 11 June 1918.
