'For personal courage and resource during the operations against Passchendaele Ridge on 12th, 13th and 14th October 1917. His platoon officer having been killed during the assembly, this NCO took command. He showed specially good leadership during the advance. When the attack was finally held up he forced a Strong Post in advance of the line being consolidated and though subjected to heavy rifle and machine-gun fire, organised his men and his position with the utmost skill, and continued to set a splendid example of courage, cheerfulness and endurance until he was wounded.'
