Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Whilst under exceptionally heavy shell fire with his company, he noticed that three men of an adjacent company had been buried by a salvo. He at once rushed to the place amidst thickly falling shells and personally extricated the three men, showing complete disregard of his personal safety under the most trying circumstances.'

Admitted to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames, 11 December 1916, while on leave; discharged to Assistant Provost Marshal, London, 5 April 1917; rejoined unit, in the field, 15 April 1917. Wounded in action, 15 June 1917 (gun shot wound, left arm: compound fracture), and admitted to No 3 NZ Field Ambulance; transferred same day to No 2 Australian Casualty Clearing Station; to 83 General Hospital, Boulogne; to England, 20 June 1917, and admitted to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames; discharged to duty, 25 July 1917. Awarded Distinguished Conduct Medal. Appointed Temporary Sergeant, 9 March 1918; Sergeant, 29 July 1918. Commenced return to New Zealand from Southampton on board HT 'Willochra', 8 March 1919; discharged, 13 May 1919.
