War service: Western Front Embarked Dunedin, 20 August 1916; disembarked Devonport, England, 24 October 1916, and marched into Sling Camp. Proceeded overseas to France, 15 November 1916; joined 1st Bn, Canterbury Infantry Regiment, in the field, 2 December 1916. Detached to Divisional Dump, 30 September 1917; rejoined Bn, 7 October 1917. Wounded in action, 12 October 1917 (gun shot wound, left thigh), and admitted to No 3 Australian Field Ambulance; transferred same day to No 3 Canadian Casualty Clearing Station, 13 October 1917; to No 3 Canadian General Hospital, Boulogne, 19 October 1917; to England, 21 December 1917, and admitted same day to 2nd London General Hospital, Chelsea. Transferred to No 1 NZ General Hospital, Brockenhurst, 13 March 1918. Classified as unfit by Medical Board, 26 March 1918, and placed on NZ Roll. Commenced return to New Zealand from Avonmouth on board HS 'Marama', 6 April 1918; discharged (no longer physically fit for War Service on account of wounds received in action), 2 May 1919.
