Military Medal 'For conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty. During the operations against the enemy on the 31st July. Pte Downie, in his capacity as one of the Company Stretcher Bearers did splendid work under severe fire. He carried wounded to a central position and subsequently got them back to the front line. He worked continuously and regardless of his own safety. He made many trips to the most advanced line of the raiding force and worked from one end of the Company front to the other. When the raiding party returned he went out again to make sure that no wounded or dead had been left out.'
