War service: Western Front Embarked Wellington, 25 September 1916; disembarked Devonport, England, 21 November 1916, and marched in to Sling Camp. Proceeded overseas to France, 14 December 1916; joined 1st Bn, Auckland Infantry Regiment, in the field, 12 January 1917. Admitted to No 7 General Hospital, St Omer, 14 March 1917 (mumps); discharged to duty, 31 March 1917; rejoined Bn, in the field, 3 April 1917. Wounded in action, 4 October 1917 (gun shot wounds, face, left hand: multiple), and admitted to No 3 NZ Field Ambulance; transferred same day to 2/1 East Lancashire Field Ambulance; discharged to duty, 18 October 1917. On leave to United Kingdom, 1 January 1918; rejoined unit from leave, 20 January 1918. Admitted to No 3 NZ Field Ambulance, 2 May 1918 (inflamed cervical gland); transferred to 3rd Casualty Clearing Station, 4 May 1918; to No 1 Australian General Hospital, Rouen; discharged to Convalescent Depot, Rouen, 23 May 1918; to No 11 Convalescent Depot, Buchy, 25 May 1918.
