War service: Western Front Wounded in action, Messines, 7 June 1917 (gun shot wound, left leg and thigh: severe), and admitted to No 2 Stationary Hospital; transferred to No 1 NZ General Hospital, Brockenhurst, 20 July 1917 (left leg amputated); to NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames, 25 August 1917; discharged from hospital, 17 May 1918. Sent to Bank of New Zealand, London, 27 May 1918; completed course in shorthand, office routine, stencil work and typing, 2 December 1918. Commenced return to New Zealand on board 'Zealandic', 27 February 1919; discharged (no longer physically fit for War Service on account of wounds received in action), 28 March 1919.
