'For conspicuous gallantry and constant devotion to duty during the recent operations around Gouzeaucourt Wood from September 8th to September 12th 1918. This NCO was in charge of the Battalion Scouts and carried out most valuable reconnaissance under most difficult circumstances. During the operations he continually went forward under very heavy artillery and machine gun fire and brought back extremely important and reliable information regarding the positions of our troops and those on the flanks. On the 12th he went out under heavy fire and reconnoitred, bringing back accurate map references which materially assisted in locating the positions of our advanced section. His gallant conduct and excellent behaviour under fire was a splendid example to his comrades.'
