Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Private Dean was in command of an advanced Lewis gun post and defence of the north east Beaudignies Bridge
head on the 23rd October 1918. When the enemy attacked under heavy machinegun covering fire, he drove them off holding his ground which was of the utmost importance. His coolness and cheerfulness in a very advanced position set a fine example to his men.'
