'For extreme gallantry and devotion to duty on 16th September 1916, at Grove Alley, when, as one of the two surviving members of the team, he took charge of a Lewis gun in a very exposed position, and for three days, with little help and practically without rest, he stuck to his post and was of great assistance to his company for the whole of this period, especially in repulsing two determined counter attacks. Recommended for Honours Despatch 3.3.17.'

'During the fighting on the Somme, from 21st September 1916, until the battalion was finally relieved, this man showed extreme gallantry and devotion to duty. He was in charge of a Lewis gun and by his skill and resolution was of great assistance to his company for the whole of this period. He had previously, on the attack on Goose Alley on 16th September 1916, when one of two survivors of a Lewis gun Team, took charge of a Lewis gun in an exposed position for three days.'
