'During the period 28th February to 20th September 1917 this Officer has displayed great organising capacity and undoubted courage ? until 6th May as Quartermaster, and from that date till 30th June as acting Adjutant, and thereafter as Quartermaster. During the action of Messines while Acting Adjutant his courage and resource were most conspicuous. This Officer has served with this Battalion since its formation in August 1914 as R.Q.M.S., Q.M. and Acting Adjutant and has always shown the utmost devotion to duty.'
