Military Medal 'For gallantry and devotion to duty. Near Gravenstafel on 4th October, when acting Sergt Major during the attack, he rendered invaluable assistance to his Company Commander in collecting platoons which had lost directions and became detached during the advance to the 2nd assembly position. This necessitated going through a heavy machine gun barrage. Throughout the battle he displayed great
coolness and initiative.'
