War service: Western Front Joined 4th Bn, 3rd New Zealand Rifle Brigade, and posted to D Company, 31 October 1916. Granted temporary rank of Captain, 3 March 1917. Note on file, 25 March 1917: 'I have to advise that Lt JW Andrews was admitted to hospital suffering from the effects of coke fumes inhaled from brazier in dugout.' Admitted to Stationary Hospital, Boulogne, 20 April 1917 (mumps). Wounded in action, 7 June 1917 (gas poisoning, slight); admitted to No 8 General Hospital, Rouen, 10 June 1917; transferred to England, and admitted to NZ General Hospital, Brockenhurst, 13 June 1917; discharged on leave, 25 August 1917.
