War service: Western Front Embarked Wellington, 31 December 1917; disembarked Glasgow, Scotland, 25 February 1918. Marched in to Larkhill and posted to Otago Infantry Regiment, 16 February 1918. Marched into Otago Infantry Regiment, Sling Camp, 6 April 1918. Proceeded overseas to France, 26 May 1918; joined 1st Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment, and posted to 10th Company, 6 July 1918. Appointed Lance Corporal, 8 January 1919. Appointed Temporary Corporal, 11 February 1919; relinquished appointment, 11 March 1919. Admitted to No 3 NZ General Hospital (Venereal Section), Codford, 4 May 1919 (gonorrhoea). Admitted to Military Hospital, Chisleldon, 18 October 1919 (gonorrhoea); discharged from hospital, 23 December 1919. Found guilty, District Court Martial, Torquay, 7 January 1920, of deserting His Majesty's Service in that he at Sling Camp absented himself without leave on the 22 September 1919 till reporting on 17 October 1919 (26 days): forfeited all ordinary pay for a period of 14 days, automatically relinquished appointment of Lance Corporal, and forfeited a further 26 days' pay.
