Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On the 1st October, during an advance east of Masnieres this NCO who was acting as C.S.M. of his Company assumed command of the right flank of his Company in consequence of all Officers with the exception of one being casualties. During an enemy counterattack when our forward positions were driven in, Sgt Cox was responsible for countless gallant actions. Under withering machine gun fire and intense enfilade artillery shelling he directed and controlled the Lewis guns covering the retirement, reorganised his section and attended to wounded. His cool manner at this critical stage in the attack gave great confidence to the retiring sections and his work is worthy of the highest praise.'
