War service: Western Front Embarked Wellington, 26 June 1916; disembarked Devonport, England, 22 August 1916, and marched into Sling Camp and reverted to ranks. Proceeded overseas to France from Sling Camp, 19 September 1916; joined 2nd Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment, in the field, and posted to 8th Company, 5 October 1916. Attached to NZ Wing Reinforcements Camp, 30 September 1917. On leave, 11 October 1917. Rejoined Bn from detachment, 26 October 1917. Wounded in action, 19 February 1918 (gas), and admitted to No 3 NZ Field Ambulance; transferred same day to No 2 Casualty Clearing Station; to No 4 General Hospital, Etaples, 19 February 1918; to England, 26 February 1918, and admitted same day to 2nd London General Hospital. Transferred to No 1 NZ General Hospital, Brockenhurst, 25 March 1918; to NZ Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch, 13 April 1918; to NZ Command Depot, Codford, 25 May 1918. Appointed Temporary Corporal, 1 January 1919. Commenced return to New Zealand from Liverpool on board 'Ayrshire', 5 August 1919; discharged, 19 October 1919.
