Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the operations he behaved in a most gallant manner in attacking and putting out of action an enemy machine-gun crew, thereby saving many casualties.'

He showed fine leadership and initiative in commanding his platoon under heavy shell-fire during and after an attack. Although his trenches were constantly blown in, he kept control of his men, and by his courage and example set a very high standard to all ranks.'
