Military Medal 'East of Ypres on the 4th October 1917 this NCO who was in charge of a platoon, led his men throughout with great skill and determination. He showed throughout the engagement the very greatest disregard to danger and when an enemy strong post, which was situated beyond the objective and in our own barrage, was causing loss, he led his platoon against it with great courage and determination, and though severely wounded himself, the position was captured by his men. His great courage, devotion to duty and fine leadership were a magnificent example to his men.'
Source: 'London Gazette' Date: Mention in Despatches 'This NCO has been with the Battalion since its arrival in France and has throughout proved himself exceptionally capable, hard-working and keen in all his duties. While on the Somme he was given the responsible task of acting as guide to the troops which called for special ability by reason of the fact that there no definite tracks. On every occasion he accomplished the task in the dark over shelling-swept areas. Since that time Corporal Chappel has constantly taken out scouting patrols as far as the enemy's parapet, gaining considerable information of great value for subsequent operations by fighting patrols and raiding parties. He has throughout been noticed for his coolness under fire, initiative and leadership, especially during the period 21 September 1916 to 25th February 1917.'
