Mention in Despatches 'For conspicuous gallantry and initiative. During operations near Gravenstafel, on 4/5th October, 1917, when all other Platoon Commanders had become casualties, he took charge of the two front lines Platoons. Throughout the attack, he displayed the greatest coolness and resourcefulness. He organised the consolidation of the front line. When the trench was submitted to an intense bombardment, by his own personal example of bravery and fearlessness, he steadied and encouraged his men.'
