Military Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On the night 24th/25th July, in the Rossignol Wood Sector, when our lines was being advanced and during consolidation, Private Caulfield was linesman of the Company carrying out the operation. In the particular area in which this man worked the enemy throughout the night paid particular attention to the forward saps with artillery fire, and the lines were continually broken. Private Caulfield, regardless of personal danger, himself kept these forward lines repaired for 12 hours continuously at a time when a counter attack was hourly expected. Again on the evening of the 25th July, during the heavy enemy bombardment, preliminary to the counter-attack on the Sector of the Company to which Private Caulfield belonged, this linesman again kept the lines continually under repair although the sap in which he had to work was continuously under heavy shell fire.'
